Amirian stands out among council candidates

To the editor:

As we approach the final election in Haverhill on Tuesday, Nov. 3, I am very excited at the prospect of Sven Amirian being elected to the City Council.

Having known Sven for the past two decades, I am impressed by his work ethic and commitment to serving Haverhill.

Sven will bring a unique, new skill set to the council. As the owner of two businesses in downtown Haverhill and a father of three young children, Sven understands the importance of budgeting and living within that budget. He also is someone who will bring new ideas to the council at a time when ideas are desperately needed.

Amirian’s proposal to have residents, both inside and outside the single-stream recycling pilot areas, weigh their trash and their recyclable materials is a small example of a way to get residents “invested” in our city and help the city’s bottom line.

As a father of two school-age children, I believe Sven will bring a much-needed different perspective to the council. Too often it seems the current council seems to focus on the “city side” of the budget at the expense of the “school side.” Amirian, with his oldest child now attending Walnut Square’s kindergarten, will no doubt be a strong advocate for Haverhill’s school system and view Haverhill’s budget in its totality.

I am proud to endorse Sven Amirian for City Council and encourage every reader of this paper to find out more about Sven and how we will help our city. Please visit his Web site at www.SvenAmirian.com.  Thank you and please vote for Sven on November 3.

Letter: Amirian is right choice for City Council

To the editor:

I was filled with great pride and pleasure when my son, Sven Amirian, first announced to me his intention to run for Haverhill City Council. Having had the opportunity to serve as the city solicitor in Haverhill under a number of administrations, I understand firsthand the challenges that our elected officials face. In these difficult economic times it is now more important than ever that we elect the right candidates to do the job.

What Haverhill needs now is a fresh perspective and new outlook to carry it from these dark times towards a brighter future. It is time for the next generation of city leaders to emerge and take up the torch. Sven Amirian will bring a youthful energy and an experienced business mind to the council.

Sven’s work in the real estate arena has prepared him to understands the nuances of city planning and he understands what is needed to insure that Haverhill grows in a calculated and responsible manner. Sven’s deep concern for the environment is also an asset as he will work tirelessly to preserve Haverhill’s open spaces and make sure that any new development does destroy our existing natural resources.

I am incredibly impressed with Sven’s abilities as a husband, father and businessman. I am certain he would make an excellent city councilor. You can find out more about Sven’s credentials and ideas at his Web site, www.svenamirian.com. I urge you all to vote for Sven Amirian for Haverhill City Council in the upcoming election. He will bring a welcome change!

Amirian Leads Recycling Experiment

Campaign notebook: Amirian leads recycling experiment

Amirian leads recycling experiment

Now that the first phase of Haverhill’s curbside single-stream recycling program has begun, City Council candidate Sven Amirian wants to know how it’s going and how we can make it better.

“I’m encouraging all citizens currently receiving single stream curbside pickup to participate in a voluntary study to gauge the amount of materials we are diverting from the waste stream and subsequently the amount that Haverhill is saving on tipping fees,” Amirian said. “The goal of this study is not only to identify the economic benefits of our new recycling program but also to look closer at our individual roles as consumers in the cycle of waste production and reduction.”

But this study is not just for those who are fortunate enough to currently receive the curbside service.

“I also want the rest of Haverhill to participate and show the untapped potential savings we could be realizing if the curbside recycling program was currently in effect city wide,” Amirian said.

As an added component to this study, Amirian also wants concerned citizens to become aware of their trash production. He asks, “Can the weekly weight of household trash be brought down to 30 pounds?”

According to Amirian, all one needs to participate is some type of scale and a two-week commitment to see the experiment through. Interested citizens are asked to separate recyclables from trash for a two-week period and then weigh both parts prior to trash and recycling pickup or drop-off at the DPW yard.

Amirian said he will be collecting the data at his website www.svenamirian.com, and that he will also be accepting phone calls and mail submission as well.

For those truly dedicated to the study, Amirian has suggested an extra credit component.

“I believe that there is an incredible opportunity for savings in diverting compostable materials as well. Not only would there be reduction in trash disposal costs but there is also the potential for a marketable or at least very useful product in the form of nutrient rich compost. So, for those hard-core recyclers out there, I’d like you to separate and weigh all your compostable food waste as well,” Amirian said.

To participate in the study or for more information, call Sven at 978-769-3781, visit www.svenamirian.com/recycle or send inquiries to Sven Amirian, 45 Talmouth Ave, Haverhill, MA 01830.

Amirian will be posting all data on his website and will be sharing any information gathered with the City of Haverhill, Team Haverhill Recycling Committee, and all interested parties.

Amirian is Right for City Council

Letter: Amirian is right for City Council

To the editor:

As Haverhill voters get ready to vote in our city’s primary election on Sept. 15, we are fortunate to have numerous choices in both the City Council and School Committee races.

Of the 20 candidates running for the nine spots on the City Council, I believe that Sven Amirian would be a wonderful new councilor. Several people have stated that Haverhill needs “new blood” and “fresh ideas” in our city’s government. I support Sven, not because he simply offers “change,” but for the following reasons.

Sven has proven himself to be strong advocate for the City of Haverhill.  He has been a great volunteer serving on the board of the Winnekenni Foundation, Haverhill Energy Task Force and pushing for citywide adoption of single stream recycling.  Sven is the fourth generation of Amirians living in the same family home on Talmouth Avenue since 1928.  He and his wife, Melanie, are now raising the fifth generation there.

With his son about to enter Haverhill’s public school system in the all-day kindergarten program this fall and twin daughters to follow in two years, Sven will bring a different perspective to the council.  Certainly all the councilors want to see the school system thrive, but he will bring the point of view of a parent with young children in the system.

Very importantly, Sven is the owner of two businesses in downtown Haverhill.  He understands the challenges of meeting payroll, dealing with a struggling economy and “balancing the books” when income fails to meet expectations.  Despite rising expenses for our city, particularly with health care costs, Sven understands that the City of Haverhill must be willing to “invest” in its future with a solid long term financial plan rather than constantly operating in crisis management mode.

For these reasons and many others, I urge Haverhill voters to vote for Sven Amirian in the Sept. 15 primary and in the Nov. 3 final election.
